Red Card or Not: Jon Moss and Tim Howard

Poor old Jon Moss. He’s not the strongest referee in the league, but he didn’t deserve this. Not only was he run ragged trying to keep up with Everton and Chelsea’s nine-goal marathon (ending 6-3 in Chelsea’s favour), but his assistant referees let him down something awful. This definitely was the worst refereeing team performance we’ve seen yet this season

Serie A Referees, Matchweek 1

Ah, Italia! The Serie A season kicks off this weekend, and as always, there’s plenty of refereeing eye candy to go around. One note about Serie A: Unlike English Premier League, Serie A employs “additional referees” – two referees at either goal line – to assist the center referee. These men are usually center referees themselves, which means that Serie

Referees for Champions League Playoffs, Wednesday August 20

Well, it certainly seems that UEFA front loaded the big names into Tuesday’s playoffs: Rizzoli, Eriksson, Mazic, Brych and Velasco. Wednesday’s referees aren’t nearly as illustrious, with one notable exception: Bjorn Kuipers of Netherlands. English Premier League Referees: Match Week 2 (August 23-25)

The big match this week is undoubtedly on Monday, between last year’s first and third place teams, Manchester City and Liverpool. Michael Oliver gets the nod in that match. Oliver (above) is clearly working his way up the ranks. Mark Clattenburg is still England’s undisputed number one, and he’s at Crystal Palace v. West Ham. Martin Atkinson, another top ref, will take Sunderland v. Manchester

MLS All-Star Referee: Jair Marrufo

So, in many ways, MLS has much more in common with American sports like baseball and basketball than they do with European club football. Witness the All-Star Game. Every summer, MLS pulls its best and brightest together for a single game. In other American sports, this game pits the best of the various conferences against each other. Since MLS isn’t

Mark Clattenburg to Referee UEFA Super Cup

Mark Clattenburg takes another big step up the ladder on August 12, when he referees the UEFA Super Cup. He’ll be in the middle when the winners of the 2013 Champions League, Real Madrid, take on the winners of the Europa League, Sevilla, in Cardiff, Wales. His preferred team, Simon Beck and Stuart Burt, will be his assistants, and Darren England
