World Cup Referees: Thursday, June 19

Over a week into the tournament, we finally get our first glimpse at England’s Howard Webb (above). I wouldn’t even call it a showpiece, pitting as it does Colombia against Cote D’Ivoire.
The biggest game of the day (which Webb could obviously not take) would probably be Uruguay v. England. Uruguay pretty much must win to have a chance at progressing, and England aren’t far behind them. Carlos Velasco Carballo, the great workhorse from Spain will take that match. Like Webb, he is highly experienced so it’s interesting this is his first match.
What is also interesting is that we have our first repeat call of the game: Joel Aguilar of El Salvador. I thought that he was solid in his first outing, and I was impressed by his ARs. Japan v. Greece isn’t a huge match, but it’s still a big deal for them.
